Launched in 2009, the Kenya Country Chapter provides women with leadership, campaigning and advocacy skills to increase their participation in politics. The Chapter is focused on providing platforms for women at the national level to share experiences and mentor women at the grassroots level.
In 2011, the Chapter was awarded a WDN grant to conduct advocacy and educational campaigns promoting women’s inclusion in politics. Through the project, the chapter trained women candidates competing in the 2013 elections on country’s the electoral process, campaign strategies, leadership, advocacy and the Political Parties Act. To support these trainings, the Chapter created a manual, which was translated into Swahili and serves as a comprehensive teaching tool on the new structures of the Kenyan government and electoral system.
In 2012, the Chapter conducted public forums focused on educating women at the grassroots level on key issues in advance of the 2013 elections. The forums, which were conducted in five regions throughout Kenya, targeted women with the least amount of education or access to information on voting rights and campaigning skills. Of the more than 650 women attending, close to half were first-time candidates.
