The Work of Legislators is Examined at WDN Conference

Lima, Peru

Lima, Peru − The Women's Democracy Network (WDN) hosted Network members from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela in Lima, Peru November 9-11, 2009, for the WDN’s second Latin America and Caribbean regional conference. The conference focused on caucus building and legislation development.

Ana Escobar, former Vice President of El Salvador, gave opening remarks and stressed the importance of women working together to provide better governing practices in their home countries. The women also had met with United States Ambassador Peter Michael McKinley at a luncheon hosted by the Ambassador.

Conference attendees participated in panel discussions on advancing legislation in parliament, developing congressional caucuses and best practices in mentoring. They also examined the implementation of electoral quota systems for women, legislation to prevent violence against women and the importance of fundraising.
