WDN Chapter Members Observe Albania’s Local Elections

Tirana, Albania – “Elections are the basic element of democracy.” In keeping with this belief, more than 30 members of the Women’s Democracy Network’s (WDN) Albania chapter joined a coalition of domestic observers to monitor the country’s May 2011 local elections. In addition, six chapter members served as long-term observers. The women’s work helped ensure the elections were transparent and that violations of elections law were reported and made public.

President Bamir Topi with WDN members and the 2011 Coalition of Domestic ObserversThe members were a part of the Coalition of Domestic Observers, an alliance of 15 nongovernmental and non-political organizations that supports the development of democracy in Albania. Their participation stemmed from their chapter’s mission: To increase the participation of Albanian women in political activities. According to WDN member Blerta Balilaj, “Elections are the basic element of democracy in Albania and we are glad that WDN is part of this process.”

Chapter members Blerta Balilaj, Ema Tershana, Vilma Gjeci, Blerina Skendo, Denisa Stafa and Elda Zotaj served as long-term observers. The women monitored the progress of preparations, logistics and the overall environment in the lead-up to Election Day. Balilaj and Tershana, also represented the chapter at a reception organized by Albanian President, H.E. Bamir Topi.

In addition to monitoring the elections, Albania chapter members also stood for office. Alma Lama ran for re-election to Tirana’s municipality council, winning her seat for a three-year term.

The May 8, 2011, local elections were highly polarized. Though the election observation mission was successful, many seats remain contested, including the Mayor of Tirana where a 10 vote divide has forced an official recount. WDN Albania chapter members, along with the Coalition of Domestic Observers, continue to stay engaged in ensuring that accurate election results prevail.
